Tales of Schwegman - Steve Boner, Gary Hallberg, Duffy Waldorf - Pebble Beach
This is better than classic. Harry and Boner are at Pebble Beach, and a picture perfect cloudless January day; not a hint of wind. They tee it up against Gary Hallberg and Duffy Waldorf. The pro's give the am's three shots each. Harry fires a light-runnin' 69, Boner beats him by 2, shooting 67. They dust the pro asses of Hallberg and Waldorf, winning $5,000 in total.
At dinner (winner, of course, buys), the pros try to negotiate a rematch next day at Spyglass. Harry and Boner are falling off their chairs. "Ain't no way guys. We beat you scratch at Pebble. No way do you get a rematch."
The morning is marked by dark clouds, wind gusts up to 45 MPH, and Harry and Boner demonstrate their uncanny ability to shoot exactly two shots apart - "firing" up 82 - 84. The pro's each shoot par.
Years later, Harry is making a sales pitch at a cocaine rehab facility in Chicago. He sees Hallberg. Stairs him straight down, saying, "I know you. Me and Steve Boner beat you and Duffy Waldorf scratch at Pebble. Don't try to play like you don't know me. You KNOW me. You KNOW ME!"
Some good rounds of golf stick around long after the thrill is gone.
